It’s that time of year again…the “Bewitiching” hour!

Deb Strain is sharing her inspiration and process for this Halloween-themed collection…

Scary skeletons, black cats, witch’s brooms, and spooky bats, all come together in my new frightfully fancy Halloween fabric line.  With pattern names like Creepy Cats and Danger Damask, I thought you might like to see some of my inspiration and process behind this slightly scary group with Moda fabrics!

I hand draw and hand paint all of my collections, so it is quite a process!  The print called “Creepy Cats,” was inspired by this guy.

Though when I drew him, he needs to look quite a bit scarier…

In the final print, the repetition of my friendly black cat made the image even creepier!

The Danger Damask started in a much the same way.  First the drawing of the motif, or central image in the pattern…

Then the repeating and painting of the image…

I create each pattern in the group, the same way.  And it is my process for every print in every collection.

It is obvious that I had a splendidly spooky (and fun!) time designing “Bewitching.”  Hope that you have as much fun using it!

Happy Friday!

  1. Fantastic Halloween fabric collection. Halloween is my favorite holiday to decorate for. I love to hand out candy while wearing a costume.

  2. Love this line and will be looking for it for it for next year. However, I started my Halloween quilt in August in order to have time for the LAQ and stitching down the binding in time. I was able to get enough fabric for the backing by the skin of my teeth because no one had much Halloween fabric out that early. My quilt was finished by Oct. 1, yay. My LAQ extraordinare quilted it with spiderwebs and spiders. Love it. Maybe if I buy more fabric now I can hold on to it for next Aug-Sept. I love the fabric, sorry it wasn’t available for a quilt this year. Thanks for showing it and the talents of Deb Strain.

  3. Thank you for sharing how you create your fabric designs – your labor of love is appreciated so much more.

  4. Cannot wait to find some on the shelves. I have some ideas already. Spooky Trick or Treat bag and a not so scary snuggle quilt. Happy Halloween y’all!

  5. Especially love the kitty (looks exactly like my Salty) and the boots, but really like the whole collection. I would enjoy having the “scrolly” fabric with all the Halloween things in it as just the “scrollies” on it. That would work with many things.

    Thanks for sharing.

  6. What beautiful designs and colors for the Halloween season. Now to order some of the fabric and some Aurifil thread to match and make some Halloween table runners.

  7. It’s fun to find out the inspiration and process behind the wonderful Moda fabric lines. Love the focal print, especially the boots and brooms, and your kitty looks just like my little 15 year old Mary! Can’t wait to get my hands on these fabrics for next Halloween.

  8. Hi Deb, The images are delightful and I so enjoyed the sharing of your creative process. Thank you! Jakey
