Blockheads ~ Block 38

Peace & Plenty.  That’s the perfect block for this time of year… at least in the non-Canadian Colonies.  While Thanksgiving is celebrated in many countries around the world, it’s always the fourth Thursday of November.  Tomorrow.

Just for fun – Thanksgiving has been observed on the fourth Thursday in November per federal legislation enacted in 1941.  It has been an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since colonial times. Historically, Thanksgiving has traditionally been a celebration of the blessings of the year, including the harvest.  It marks the beginning of what we call the “Holiday Season”.

The prints are: the gold is Rue Indienne by French General, the red is Fern Hill by Jan Patek, the background is Snowberry by 3 Sisters and the blues are from Fern Hill, Alice’s Scrapbag by Barbara Brackman, Snowberry and a few others.

Peace & Plenty in Fig Tree – the prints are from Strawberry Fields RevisitedFarmhouse and Chestnut Street.  The background is a new favorite, it’s from the “coming soon” Regency Blues by Christopher Wilson-Tate.  It has a beautiful cream-ivory tone that makes it a great background for collections from Fig Tree, Minick & Simpson, and anything where you don’t want a white background.  

Question of the Week ~ What is your favorite family Thanksgiving tradition?  Turkey?  Favorite pie?

My brother calls it inviting “holiday orphans” to dinner – folks who find themselves alone on the holiday, whether because they’re in town on business, have family traveling, or simply find themselves contemplating a microwave Thanksgiving dinner.  It started with our Dad, his work meant that there were usually business associates who found themselves in town on the holidays, often from other countries.  He’d invite them to come to dinner, sometimes driving into the city – San Francisco – to fetch them from hotels.  My brother said it best – at it’s core, Thanksgiving is about being thankful, expressing gratitude.  No matter where you are, who you’re with, there is reason to be thankful.

Turkey?  Always.  From roasted to brined, stuffed and not, I think we’ve tried most of the variations.  My preference is probably roasted, using a recipe by Tyler Florence – Split-Breast Roasted Turkey.  But since I’m not cooking this time, my brother has ordered a smoked turkey, and I’ve heard mention of a fried turkey as well.

Pie!  My favorite is Pecan Pie, though I can really only eat a few bites.  A local fancy grocery store had a Honey Balsamic Vinegar Blueberry pie for a few years that was to. die. for. good… but alas, it’s gone away.  My brother?  He loves berry pies so I think that’s on the menu.  And Pumpkin.  Because it’s just not Thanksgiving without it… though I really prefer Sweet Potato Pie.

Mostly I’m just there for the cranberry sauce, stuffing and mashed potatoes.  And gravy, of course.

  1. Thanksgiving isn’t always celebrated in November in the Colonies! Canada was a colony longer than the United States and we celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October.

  2. Last year I found a crock pot turkey recipe that makes the juiciest turkey…of course you’re limited to a turkey breast with this method. We had our Thanksgiving this past Sunday, and in addition to the traditional pumpkin pie our daughter made a delicious Cranberry Cheesecake Crumb pie. Everyone loved it so much, it’s going into the Christmas rotation, Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving,

  3. We love turkey although I do feel sorry for the poor thing. I love all the sides. This year I am trying a new dressing made from frozen beef tamales, gluten free cornbread, celery, and onions. My husband hates stuffing and dressing and all things spicy so I am making this for my son and me. I love taking the time to think of the countless ways my life is blessed. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Carrie!

  4. Love turkey however my husband does not so homeade meatballs and sauce are in store for him. We have also brought not only family, (which honestly can be more trying than other guests), we have also invited those who have no where else to go. I want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.
